Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
