Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
